Education & Stewardship for parks

Palisades Stewardship Education Centre, Accommodation & Storage Buildings, Jasper, alberta

At 3,380 sq. ft., this Accommodation Building in Jasper National Park was built to support the Palisades Stewardship Education Centre—an educational outreach program of Parks Canada. Sensitive to the heritage and sustainability considerations required by the project, RK’s team designed a space featuring natural wood and stone exterior features, substantial window space to let in sunlight, and a grand porch allowing patrons to fully experience the surrounding mountain scenery.

The design of the 1-storey building lends itself wonderfully to the park setting, and stands cohesively amongst the older, surrounding structures. RK’s design also included a separate storage/ garage structure of non-combustible construction that features a warm storage area, fire-rated overhead door, and covered front patio. These two buildings addressed the immediate needs of the Palisades Educational Centre to accommodate students, and to safely store a variety of operational vehicles.

Riddell Kurczaba worked effectively with The Parks Canada Agency to understand the rustic nature of the Palisades Stewardship Education Centre site, the functional operations of the facility, and how the new buildings would fit into management of the Palisades Centre. These efforts helped to ensure that the project intent was well achieved.
